How do I assess the cyber security of a supplier?

How do I assess the cyber security of a supplier? The practical answer is to look for specific, checkable indicators rather than guess. Your supplier has your data and often your network path. The question of whether they are secure is usually answered by a questionnaire nobody has time to read, which tells you nothing.

Key takeaways

As of 24 October 2026: the service descriptions, prices and turnaround figures on this page are current.

What do the signs usually look like?

These are the indicators we check for. The presence of one is a prompt to look closer, not a diagnosis.

What do you actually do?

We tier your suppliers by access and dependency, run structured due diligence on the critical ones, review the contract clauses that should exist, and put continuous external monitoring on their exposed infrastructure.

You get a written record of what was checked, what was found and what was not found. The third of those is as useful as the other two, because it tells you which risks you can stop worrying about.

What can you do right now?

What does this usually cost, and how long does it take?

The commercial shape is deliberately simple: a fixed fee, a band agreed up front, and a delivery date you can put in a plan. Some of these situations cannot wait for a scheduled slot, and where that is the case we change the approach rather than the date.

What does this usually cost?

Expect a fixed fee with a stated band, agreed before work begins, and a delivery date set in advance. Some situations here are time-critical, and where yours is, the way we run the engagement changes with it.

What are the common questions about this problem?

How do I assess the cyber security of a supplier?
A vendor security assessment reviews their controls, their evidence and their exposure rather than your own network: a questionnaire and evidence review, a breach and disclosure history check, credential and privileged-access testing, a software supply-chain and dependency review, and a re-test of anything they remediate.
Why does supplier risk matter more now?
Indian ransomware operators increasingly treat suppliers, IT vendors and logistics partners as entry points into larger enterprise customers. A business with a weaker security posture than its own suppliers is an attractive route, because the supplier relationship is already trusted.
How often should we re-audit a supplier?
At minimum annually, and sooner if the supplier handles a larger class of data, has had a security incident, has changed ownership or sub-processors, or has materially changed its own infrastructure. The depth should match the consequence of that supplier being compromised.
What should be in a vendor risk register?
Each entry records the supplier, the data and access they hold, the controls they have evidenced, the residual risk, the review date, and the named owner. Without an owner and a date it becomes a spreadsheet nobody maintains, and a register nobody maintains is not a control.
