How do I check if my email account has been hacked?

How do I check if my email account has been hacked? The practical answer is to look for specific, checkable indicators rather than guess. An email account is usually the master key. It holds password resets for everything else, and it is the account fraud rings target first because it is so cheap to take.

Key takeaways

As of 24 October 2026: the service descriptions, prices and turnaround figures on this page are current.

What do the signs usually look like?

These are the indicators we check for. The presence of one is a prompt to look closer, not a diagnosis.

What do you actually do?

We review active sessions, inbox rules and forwarding, connected apps, and the OAuth consents that let a third party read and send mail. We then remove them, re-key the account, and check whether the original entry point — usually a phishing link — left anything else behind.

The engagement produces a written record of what was checked, what was found, and what was not found. That last part matters as much as the first two, because it tells you which risks you can stop worrying about.

What can you do right now?

What does this usually cost, and how long does it take?

This is a fixed-fee piece of work with a published band and an agreed delivery date, not a day rate that drifts. If what you are dealing with cannot wait for a scheduled slot, say so when you get in touch and we will look at it differently.

What does this usually cost?

The commercial shape is deliberately simple: a fixed fee, a band agreed up front, and a delivery date you can put in a plan. Some of these situations cannot wait for a scheduled slot, and where that is the case we change the approach rather than the date.

What are the common questions about this problem?

How do I know if my email account has been hacked?
Check four places: your sent folder for messages you did not write, your inbox and rules for auto-forwarding or deletion rules you did not create, the account's login activity for unfamiliar IPs, devices and locations, and whether a new recovery contact or a new OAuth app consent has been added.
Is a phishing email easy to spot now?
Less so than it was. A phishing email in 2026 may be written by a language model, so bad grammar and odd phrasing are no longer a reliable signal. The indicators that still hold are the operational ones: a new invoice, a changed bank detail, an unexpected attachment, and a link that does not match the visible domain.
Does two-factor authentication still protect the account?
It does, but only if the attacker cannot intercept the second factor. Device-code phishing, where the user approves a prompt on their own phone, defeats an MFA that would otherwise hold. Passkeys and hardware security keys are materially stronger against this specific attack.
What should I change first if my email is compromised?
Change the password, revoke every active session and OAuth grant, remove any forwarding rules, restore the correct recovery contacts, and enable a phishing-resistant second factor. Work back from the root account, because every other account you own probably recovers through it.
