How can I tell if I am being phished?

How can I tell if I am being phished? The practical answer is to look for specific, checkable indicators rather than guess. Phishing has moved past bad spelling. The messages that land now are built from real information about you, timed to a real transaction you are expecting, and often arrive as a genuine reply in a real thread.

Key takeaways

As of 24 October 2026: the service descriptions, prices and turnaround figures on this page are current.

What do the signs usually look like?

These are the indicators we check for. The presence of one is a prompt to look closer, not a diagnosis.

What do you actually do?

We look at the message itself, the sending infrastructure, the links and the landing pages, and we tell you what was harvested and what to do about it. For an organisation, we run a controlled simulation across your staff so you learn where the real risk is.

You get a written record of what was checked, what was found, and what was not found. That last part matters as much as the first two: it tells you which risks you can stop worrying about.

What can you do right now?

What does this usually cost, and how long does it take?

The work here is priced as a fixed fee with a stated band, agreed before anything starts, and delivered to a date you can plan around. Where the situation is more urgent than a scheduled engagement allows, tell us and it is handled differently.

What does this usually cost?

This is a fixed-fee piece of work with a published band and an agreed delivery date, not a day rate that drifts. If what you are dealing with cannot wait for a scheduled slot, say so when you get in touch and we will look at it differently.

What are the common questions about this problem?

How can I tell if an email is phishing?
Check the operational signals rather than the writing: does the link destination match the visible text, is the invoice or bank detail new, is there an unexpected attachment, does the display name differ from the actual sending domain, and does the message ask for urgency or secrecy. Grammar is no longer a reliable signal because phishing emails are now written by language models.
What is a phishing simulation and is it worth doing for a small team?
A phishing simulation sends safe, controlled lures to your own staff and reports how many would have clicked or submitted credentials. It is one of the highest-value things a small business can do, because the most common route into a business is a person rather than a vulnerability, and the fix is cheap.
What do I do if I have already clicked?
Treat it as an incident, not as a mistake. Disconnect the machine from the network, do not close the browser if a credential was entered, report it immediately, and reset credentials from a different device. The speed of the response matters far more than the fact that it happened.
How many staff can be expected to fail a phishing test?
The honest answer is that a first round will fail more than you expect, which is the point of running it. A rate of around 10 to 20 percent clicking is common on a first simulation and falls sharply once targeted training has been delivered to the people who clicked.
