How do I find out if my data has been breached?

How do I find out if my data has been breached? The practical answer is to look for specific, checkable indicators rather than guess. Being in a breach is less about a dramatic event and more about accumulation. One site in 2019, another in 2021, and a breach of a service you do not remember signing up for are still all working for an attacker today.

Key takeaways

As of 24 October 2026: the service descriptions, prices and turnaround figures on this page are current.

What do the signs usually look like?

These are the indicators we check for. The presence of one is a prompt to look closer, not a diagnosis.

What do you actually do?

We check your email addresses and phone numbers against known breach corpora, identify which credential pairs are exposed, and give you a prioritised account-takeover plan. For organisations we do the same for the corporate domain and tell you which credentials need rotating first.

You get a written record of what was checked, what was found and what was not found. The third of those is as useful as the other two, because it tells you which risks you can stop worrying about.

What can you do right now?

What does this usually cost, and how long does it take?

The commercial shape is deliberately simple: a fixed fee, a band agreed up front, and a delivery date you can put in a plan. Some of these situations cannot wait for a scheduled slot, and where that is the case we change the approach rather than the date.

What does this usually cost?

Expect a fixed fee with a stated band, agreed before work begins, and a delivery date set in advance. Some situations here are time-critical, and where yours is, the way we run the engagement changes with it.

What are the common questions about this problem?

How do I find out if my data has been breached?
Start with the accounts you can check yourself: your email address against known breach corpora, your phone number, and any customer or employee data held by a third party you use. For corporate data, the check is a proper exposure review: what personal data you hold, where it is, who has access, and how long you keep it.
Is my data definitely on the dark web if I saw my email in a breach list?
A breach list confirms that a specific record appeared in a named breach, which is a real exposure of whatever fields that breach contained. It is not a complete picture of what else has been taken, and it is not evidence that a sale has happened. A dark web monitoring service can show listings over time, but absence of a listing is not absence of exposure.
Do I have to report a breach of personal data under the DPDP Act?
The DPDP Act's notification obligations under Rule 7 are scheduled to commence from May 2027. Until they do, the operative obligations are CERT-In's 6-hour reporting rule for listed incidents, and the contractual and common-law duties that already apply. The exposure does not wait for the commencement date, so the assessment work should be done now.
How quickly can you respond to a suspected breach?
Retainer clients are engaged within 4 hours of a call, non-retainer clients within 12. A CERT-In compliant report can be filed within 6 hours of noticing the incident, and it identifies the affected system, the closest Annexure I category, and the occurrence and detection timestamps.
